These delightful fried dough balls, also known as Zeppole, are a classic treat enjoyed at fairs and carnivals. They can be served plain, dusted with powdered sugar, drizzled with syrup, or filled with sweet minced fruit or custard. Perfect for a festive gathering or as a fun dessert!

Servings: 10

Ingredients

All-purpose flour
2 cups
Granulated sugar
1/4 cup
Baking powder
1 tablespoon
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Egg
1, beaten
Milk
3/4 cup
Vanilla extract
1 teaspoon
Vegetable oil
for frying
Powdered sugar
for dusting
Maple syrup
for serving (optional)
Mince filling (fruit or custard)
1 cup (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the beaten egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be about 350°F (175°C).
  5. Using a tablespoon, drop small balls of dough into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  6. Fry the dough balls for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown.
  7. Remove the fried dough balls with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. If desired, fill some of the dough balls with the mince filling using a piping bag.
  9. Dust the fried dough balls with powdered sugar or serve with maple syrup for dipping.
