Amagwinya (Vetkoek)
These delightful fried dough balls, also known as Zeppole, are a classic treat enjoyed at fairs and carnivals. They can be served plain, dusted with powdered sugar, drizzled with syrup, or filled with sweet minced fruit or custard. Perfect for a festive gathering or as a fun dessert!
Ingredients
- 2 cups All-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon Baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1, beaten Egg
- 3/4 cup Milk
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- for frying Vegetable oil
- for dusting Powdered sugar
- for serving (optional) Maple syrup
- 1 cup (optional) Mince filling (fruit or custard)

Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, combine the beaten egg, milk, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be about 350°F (175°C).
- Using a tablespoon, drop small balls of dough into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry the dough balls for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown.
- Remove the fried dough balls with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- If desired, fill some of the dough balls with the mince filling using a piping bag.
- Dust the fried dough balls with powdered sugar or serve with maple syrup for dipping.
