Servings: 8

Ingredients

Pie crust
2 (9-inch) crusts
Egg
1, beaten (for egg wash)
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons, cut into small pieces
Lemon juice
1 tablespoon
Salt
1/4 teaspoon
Nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon
Cinnamon
1 teaspoon
All-purpose flour
1/4 cup
Brown sugar
1/4 cup
Granulated sugar
3/4 cup
Apples
6 cups, peeled, cored, and sliced (preferably a mix of granny smith and honeycrisp)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Roll out one pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish, ensuring it covers the bottom and sides evenly.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly for optimal baking.
  5. Dot the top of the apple filling with small pieces of unsalted butter to enhance richness and flavor.
  6. Roll out the second pie crust and cover the pie, trimming any excess crust. Crimp the edges securely to seal the pie.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  8. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg to achieve a beautiful golden finish.
  9. Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  10. Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the filling to set.
