Savor the delightful layers of this classic apple strudel, a beloved pastry that originated in the picturesque regions of Austria and Hungary. This scrumptious treat features delicate, flaky phyllo pastry enveloping a warm, spiced apple filling with hints of cinnamon and sweet raisins. Each bite provides a satisfying crunch followed by a tender, gooey center, perfect for cozy gatherings or as an elegant dessert. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar, alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent experience.

Servings: 8

Ingredients

Phyllo pastry sheets
8 sheets
Unsalted butter
1/2 cup, melted
Breadcrumbs
1/2 cup
Raisins
1/2 cup
Ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon
Granulated sugar
1/3 cup
Apples
4 cups, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 4 medium apples)
Powdered sugar
for dusting before serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and raisins. Mix well to ensure the apples are evenly coated with the sugar and spices.
  3. On a clean, dry surface, lay down one sheet of phyllo pastry and brush it generously with melted butter. Repeat this process with three more sheets, layering and brushing each with butter for a total of four sheets.
  4. Evenly sprinkle breadcrumbs over the top layer of phyllo pastry. This will help absorb moisture from the apple filling and keep the pastry crisp.
  5. Spread the apple filling evenly over the breadcrumbs, ensuring not to overfill the pastry to prevent leaks during baking.
  6. Begin rolling the layered pastry from one end into a log shape, tucking in the sides as you go to create a sealed strudel.
  7. Carefully transfer the rolled strudel to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Brush the top of the strudel with any remaining melted butter for that perfect golden finish.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  10. Remove the strudel from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before slicing.
  11. Dust generously with powdered sugar just before serving. Enjoy warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
