Authentic Korean Army Stew (Budae Jjigae)
Travel to the heart of South Korea with this warming and comforting one-pot meal. Popularly known as Budae Jjigae or 'Army Stew', this dish is a hearty fusion of American and Korean ingredients, a delicious testament to Korea's post-war era. Bursting with the bold flavors of spam, sausages, kimchi, and gochujang, it's sure to become a favorite comfort food!
Ingredients
- Water
- 4 cups
- Sesame oil
- 2 tablespoons
- Sugar
- 1 tablespoon
- Soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons
- Gochujang (Korean red pepper paste)
- 2 tablespoons
- Garlic
- 4 cloves, minced
- Green onions
- 2, chopped
- Onion
- 1, sliced
- Canned baked beans
- 1 can
- Firm tofu
- 1 block, cubed
- Kimchi
- 1 cup, chopped
- Instant ramen noodles
- 2 packets
- Sausages
- 4, sliced
- Spam
- 1 can, sliced
Instructions
- Heat the sesame oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the sliced spam and sausages, and sauté until they are browned.
- Stir in the sliced onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion becomes translucent.
- Add the chopped kimchi and continue to sauté for a few more minutes.
- Stir in the gochujang, soy sauce, sugar, and more sesame oil. Mix well until everything is evenly coated.
- Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, add the instant ramen noodles, cubed tofu, and canned baked beans. Let it simmer until the noodles are fully cooked.
- Garnish with the chopped green onions just before serving.
- Serve piping hot and enjoy this comforting Korean stew!
Tips
- For an extra kick, add some sliced chili peppers or more gochujang.
- You can also add other ingredients like mushrooms, American cheese, or baked beans for more depth of flavor.
- Serve with a side of rice and kimchi for a complete meal.
