Ingredients

  • Ground cinnamon (for garnish)

  • Sugar (2 tablespoons)
  • Vanilla extract (1 teaspoon)
  • Cinnamon (1/2 teaspoon)
  • Milk (2 cups)
  • Mexican chocolate (2 ounces, chopped)
  • Water (2 cups)
  • Masa harina (1/4 cup)

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, whisk together the masa harina and water until well combined.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped Mexican chocolate to the saucepan and continue stirring until the chocolate is melted and well incorporated.
  4. Pour in the milk and add the cinnamon, vanilla extract, and sugar. Stir well to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove from heat and let the atole cool slightly before serving.
  7. Pour the atole into mugs or cups and top with whipped cream.
  8. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top for garnish.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy!
