Baklava
Indulge in the enchanting layers of Baklava, a beloved Middle Eastern pastry that showcases the perfect harmony of crispy phyllo dough, crunchy nuts, and a sweet honey syrup. This decadent dessert has a rich history, believed to have originated in the Ottoman Empire, where it was a symbol of wealth and hospitality. Each bite delivers a delightful crunch followed by the warm embrace of honey and spices, making it an irresistible treat for any occasion.
Ingredients
- Unsalted butter
- 1 cup, melted
- Phyllo dough
- 1 package (16 oz), thawed
- Walnuts
- 1 cup, finely chopped
- Pistachios
- 1 cup, finely chopped
- Sugar
- 1/2 cup
- Ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon
- Honey
- 1 cup
- Water
- 1/2 cup
- Lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, pistachios, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.
- Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
- Carefully layer 5 sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
- Repeat the layering process, adding another 5 sheets of phyllo dough followed by more nut mixture. Continue layering until all the phyllo dough and nut mixture is used, finishing with a top layer of phyllo dough.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, ensuring you cut through to the bottom.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crispy.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the honey syrup. In a saucepan, combine honey, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup over it, ensuring all pieces are covered.
- Allow the baklava to cool completely in the baking dish before serving.
Tips
- For an extra touch of flavor, consider adding a splash of vanilla extract to the honey syrup.
- Try experimenting with different nut combinations such as almonds or hazelnuts for a unique twist.
- Baklava can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week, and the flavors will continue to deepen over time.
