Indulge in the enchanting layers of Baklava, a beloved Middle Eastern pastry that showcases the perfect harmony of crispy phyllo dough, crunchy nuts, and a sweet honey syrup. This decadent dessert has a rich history, believed to have originated in the Ottoman Empire, where it was a symbol of wealth and hospitality. Servings: 16

Ingredients

Unsalted butter
1 cup, melted
Phyllo dough
1 package (16 oz), thawed
Walnuts
1 cup, finely chopped
Pistachios
1 cup, finely chopped
Sugar
1/2 cup
Ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon
Honey
1 cup
Water
1/2 cup
Lemon juice
2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, pistachios, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.
  3. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Carefully layer 5 sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next.
  5. Sprinkle a generous amount of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  6. Repeat the layering process, adding another 5 sheets of phyllo dough followed by more nut mixture. Continue layering until all the phyllo dough and nut mixture is used, finishing with a top layer of phyllo dough.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, ensuring you cut through to the bottom.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crispy.
  9. While the baklava is baking, prepare the honey syrup. In a saucepan, combine honey, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let simmer for 10 minutes.
  10. Remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup over it, ensuring all pieces are covered.
  11. Allow the baklava to cool completely in the baking dish before serving.
