Refreshing Barley Water
Barley water is a delightful and nutritious beverage enjoyed for centuries in various cultures, particularly in the Mediterranean and Middle East. This ancient drink is cherished for its myriad health benefits, including aiding digestion and hydration. With a soothing blend of pearl barley, zesty lemon, and the natural sweetness of honey, this refreshing drink is perfect for any time of the day—whether you're seeking to cool down on a hot summer day or looking for a comforting warm drink. Serve it chilled over ice for a revitalizing treat or warm in a mug for a cozy experience. Add a few fresh mint leaves or a sprinkle of cinnamon for an extra flavor twist!
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- Pearl barley
- 1 cup
- Water
- 4 cups
- Honey
- 2-3 tablespoons, to taste
- Lemon
- 1, juiced (plus slices for garnish)
Instructions
- Rinse the pearl barley under cold water until the water runs clear to remove any impurities.
- In a large pot, combine the rinsed barley and 4 cups of water. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the barley is tender and the water has reduced by half.
- After cooking, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a large bowl or pitcher, discarding the barley grains.
- Allow the barley water to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, stir in the freshly squeezed lemon juice and honey, mixing until the honey is fully dissolved.
- Taste and adjust the sweetness by adding more honey if desired.
- Serve the barley water chilled over ice or warm in a mug. Garnish with lemon slices and/or fresh mint leaves for an extra touch.
