Classic New Orleans Beignets with Powdered Sugar
Indulge in the delightful experience of biting into a fluffy, warm beignet, a cherished pastry that embodies the spirit of New Orleans. Originating from French settlers, these deep-fried doughnuts are light and airy, and each bite is generously dusted with powdered sugar, creating a sweet and tempting treat perfect for breakfast or dessert. Whether enjoyed at a café in the French Quarter or made at home, beignets are best served fresh and hot, accompanied by a steaming cup of café au lait.
Servings: 12
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 2 cups, plus extra for dusting
- Granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup
- Baking powder
- 1 tablespoon
- Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg
- 1 large
- Milk
- 3/4 cup
- Vegetable oil
- for frying (about 4 cups)
- Powdered sugar
- for dusting
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vegetable oil until smooth and fully incorporated.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. The mixture should be slightly lumpy; do not overmix.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rest for about 30 minutes. This helps the beignets become fluffier.
- In a deep fryer or large pot, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the temperature is accurate.
- Once the oil is hot, drop spoonfuls of the dough (about 1 tablespoon each) into the oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry in batches if necessary.
- Fry the beignets for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil.
- Drain the beignets on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
- While still warm, dust the beignets generously with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy them fresh for the best flavor!
