Ingredients

Original recipe serves 8

Olive oil
1 tablespoon
Poppy seeds
1 tablespoon
Onion, finely chopped
1 medium
Salt
1 teaspoon
Warm water
1 cup
Active dry yeast
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons)
All-purpose flour
2 1/2 cups

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture.
  3. Stir the mixture until a dough begins to form. Transfer this dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for an hour or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a flat round disc, about 4 inches in diameter.
  7. Place these dough discs onto the prepared baking sheet and allow them to rest for 10 minutes.
  8. In a small bowl, mix together the finely chopped onion, poppy seeds, and olive oil.
  9. Create a small indentation in the center of each dough disc and fill it with a spoonful of the onion-poppy seed mixture.
  10. Bake the bialys in your preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  11. Remove the bialys from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy your homemade Polish Bialy!

Tips

  • 💡 For added flavor, consider sautéing the onions in olive oil before mixing them with the poppy seeds.
  • 💡 Bialys are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days. Warm them up in the oven before serving for a just-baked taste.
