Ingredients
- Olive oil
- 1 tablespoon
- Poppy seeds
- 1 tablespoon
- Onion, finely chopped
- 1 medium
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Warm water
- 1 cup
- Active dry yeast
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- All-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture.
- Stir the mixture until a dough begins to form. Transfer this dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for an hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a flat round disc, about 4 inches in diameter.
- Place these dough discs onto the prepared baking sheet and allow them to rest for 10 minutes.
- In a small bowl, mix together the finely chopped onion, poppy seeds, and olive oil.
- Create a small indentation in the center of each dough disc and fill it with a spoonful of the onion-poppy seed mixture.
- Bake the bialys in your preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
- Remove the bialys from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy your homemade Polish Bialy!
Tips
- For added flavor, consider sautéing the onions in olive oil before mixing them with the poppy seeds.
- Bialys are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days. Warm them up in the oven before serving for a just-baked taste.
