Homemade Birch Liqueur

Discover the enchanting flavors of nature with this homemade birch liqueur. Infused with aromatic birch bark, warm spices, and a hint of citrus from orange peel, this unique spirit is perfect for sipping on its own or mixing into cocktails. Traditionally made in the northern regions, birch liqueur has deep roots in folk medicine and celebration, making it a wonderful addition to your bar or a delightful gift for friends and family. Let the essence of the forest come alive in every sip!

Serves 20 (1 oz per serving)

Ingredients

Dried birch bark
1 cup
Vodka
2 cups
Sugar
1 cup
Cinnamon stick
1
Cloves
5 whole
Orange peel
1 large piece, preferably organic

Instructions

  1. In a clean glass jar, combine the dried birch bark and vodka. Seal it tightly and place it in a cool, dark place to steep for 2 weeks.
  2. After 2 weeks, strain the infused vodka through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove all the birch bark, ensuring a smooth liqueur.
  3. In a saucepan over low heat, combine the infused vodka, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, and orange peel. Stir gently until the sugar has completely dissolved, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. Once the mixture is heated through, remove it from the heat and let it cool to room temperature.
  5. Strain the liqueur again to remove the spices and orange peel, ensuring a clear and refined spirit.
  6. Transfer the birch liqueur to a clean bottle or jar, seal it, and store it in a cool, dark place for at least 1 week to allow the flavors to develop further.
  7. Serve chilled as a digestif, or use it in cocktails like a Birch Old Fashioned or a Birch Mule.
