Classic NYC-Style Black and White Cookies

Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 2 cups
- Baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt
- 1/4 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup
- Granulated sugar
- 1 cup
- Eggs
- 2
- Vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon
- Milk
- 1/2 cup
- Confectioners' sugar
- 4 cups
- Boiling water
- 1/4 cup
- Semi-sweet chocolate, melted
- 1/2 cup
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time into the butter mixture, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture.
- Drop the dough by 1/4 cupfuls onto the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake until the edges are golden, about 15 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool on the pans for 5 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the icing, whisk together the confectioners' sugar, boiling water, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla until smooth in a large bowl.
- Spread the vanilla icing onto one half of each cookie.
- Stir the melted chocolate into the remaining icing until smooth, then spread this chocolate icing onto the other half of each cookie.
- Let the cookies stand until the icing is set.
