Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place one pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Mix well to ensure every apple slice is coated.
- Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust in the dish.
- Scatter small pieces of unsalted butter over the top of the apple filling.
- Cover the pie with the second pie crust. Trim any excess crust and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
- Using a sharp knife, cut a few slits on the top crust. This will allow steam to escape during baking.
- Brush the top crust with the beaten egg. This gives the pie a beautiful golden finish.
- Sprinkle the turbinado sugar over the egg-washed crust for a crunchy, sweet top.
- Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 1 hour before serving. This helps the filling thicken.
- Serve the pie warm or at room temperature. Enjoy this taste of Boston!
Tips
- Choose a mix of apples for a more complex flavor. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are all great choices.
- For a fun twist, try adding a handful of dried cranberries or chopped pecans to the apple filling.
