Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 3 cups
- Granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup
- Active dry yeast
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet)
- Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Whole milk
- 1 cup
- Unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons, melted
- Egg
- 1, beaten
- Vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon
- Heavy cream
- 1/2 cup
- Semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup
- Custard filling
- 1 cup (prepared or homemade)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm (about 110°F). Do not let it boil.
- Pour the warm milk into the dry ingredients, followed by the melted butter, beaten egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until a soft dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to a 1/2-inch thickness on a floured surface.
- Using a round cookie cutter, cut out doughnut shapes and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover the doughnuts with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the doughnuts for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once cooled, use a piping bag to fill each doughnut with custard filling.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips and heavy cream together in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth and well combined.
- Dip the top of each filled doughnut into the chocolate glaze, allowing any excess to drip off.
- Place the glazed doughnuts on a wire rack to let the chocolate set.
- Serve and enjoy your decadent Boston cream doughnuts!
Tips
- For a lighter doughnut, consider frying them instead of baking. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F and fry until golden brown.
- Experiment with different fillings like raspberry or lemon curd for a fun twist on the classic.
- For a more intense chocolate flavor, you can add a splash of espresso to the chocolate glaze.
