Serves 12

Ingredients

All-purpose flour
3 cups
Granulated sugar
1/4 cup
Active dry yeast
2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet)
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Whole milk
1 cup
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons, melted
Egg
1, beaten
Vanilla extract
1 teaspoon
Heavy cream
1/2 cup
Semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup
Custard filling
1 cup (prepared or homemade)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm (about 110°F). Do not let it boil.
  3. Pour the warm milk into the dry ingredients, followed by the melted butter, beaten egg, and vanilla extract. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to a 1/2-inch thickness on a floured surface.
  7. Using a round cookie cutter, cut out doughnut shapes and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Cover the doughnuts with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake the doughnuts for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  11. Once cooled, use a piping bag to fill each doughnut with custard filling.
  12. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips and heavy cream together in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth and well combined.
  13. Dip the top of each filled doughnut into the chocolate glaze, allowing any excess to drip off.
  14. Place the glazed doughnuts on a wire rack to let the chocolate set.
  15. Serve and enjoy your decadent Boston cream doughnuts!

Tips

  • 💡 For a lighter doughnut, consider frying them instead of baking. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F and fry until golden brown.
  • 💡 Experiment with different fillings like raspberry or lemon curd for a fun twist on the classic.
  • 💡 For a more intense chocolate flavor, you can add a splash of espresso to the chocolate glaze.
