Braai Broodjies

Indulge in the mouthwatering allure of Braai Broodjies, a beloved South African barbecue sandwich that perfectly marries gooey cheddar cheese, ripe tomatoes, and sweet onions between slices of perfectly toasted bread. Traditionally enjoyed during outdoor gatherings, these sandwiches embody the spirit of camaraderie and the joy of sharing delicious food around the fire. Crispy on the outside and melty on the inside, they're a must-have for your next braai!

to taste

Instructions

  1. Start by buttering one side of each slice of bread generously using softened unsalted butter.
  2. On the non-buttered side of four slices, layer the grated cheddar cheese, sliced tomatoes, and thinly sliced onion. Season generously with salt and pepper to enhance the flavors.
  3. Top these four slices with the remaining slices of bread, ensuring the buttered sides are facing up.
  4. Preheat your braai (grill) to medium heat. Place the sandwiches on the braai grid and close it.
  5. Grill the sandwiches carefully, turning frequently, until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted, which should take about 15 minutes.
  6. Once perfectly grilled, remove from the heat and let them cool slightly before cutting them into halves or quarters.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy the delicious gooeyness of your Braai Broodjies!

Tips

  • 💡 For an extra flavor kick, consider adding a smear of chutney or a slice of jalapeño for a spicy twist.
  • 💡 Experiment with different types of cheese, such as Gouda or mozzarella, to tailor the flavor to your liking.
  • 💡 If you prefer a sweeter taste, caramelize the onions before adding them to the sandwich.
