Ingredients

Original recipe serves 4-6

Pork belly
2 pounds, cut into 1-inch cubes
Soy sauce
1/4 cup
Rice wine
1/4 cup
Sugar
2 tablespoons
Garlic
4 cloves, minced
Cinnamon stick
1
Star anise
2
Water
3 cups
Steamed rice
4 cups, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat over medium heat and add the pork belly. Cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic, soy sauce, rice wine, sugar, star anise, and the cinnamon stick to the pot. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  3. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. After 2 hours, check the tenderness of the pork; it should be melt-in-your-mouth tender. If needed, simmer longer.
  5. Serve the braised pork over bowls of steamed rice, spooning the rich sauce over the top.

Tips

  • 💡 For added depth of flavor, consider adding a splash of dark soy sauce for color.
  • 💡 You can garnish the dish with chopped scallions or cilantro for a fresh touch.
  • 💡 If you prefer a thicker sauce, uncover the pot in the last 30 minutes of cooking to reduce the liquid.
