Butterbrot, a quintessential German sandwich, is a delightful harmony of simple yet gratifying flavors. Comprising of fresh, crunchy vegetables, savory ham, and smooth cheese delicately nestled between slices of hearty bread slathered with rich, creamy butter, this sandwich is a testament to the beauty of simplicity in German cuisine. Ingredients

Tomato
1, thinly sliced
Cucumber
1/2, thinly sliced
Ham
1 slice
Cheese
1 slice, your choice (swiss, gouda, or emmental are popular choices)
Unsalted butter
1-2 tablespoons, at room temperature
Bread
2 slices, preferably german rye or sourdough

Instructions

  1. Lay out the bread slices on a clean surface.
  2. Spread the butter generously on one side of each bread slice, reaching all the way to the edges.
  3. On one of the slices, arrange the cheese slice to cover the bread surface.
  4. Layer the ham slice over the cheese.
  5. Evenly distribute the cucumber and tomato slices on top of the ham.
  6. Cover with the second slice of bread, butter side down.
  7. You can enjoy your Butterbrot as a whole, or if you prefer, slice it diagonally in half for easier eating.
