Buuz
Buuz are delightful Mongolian steamed dumplings traditionally filled with savory ground beef and aromatic spices. These little pockets of flavor are a staple in Mongolian cuisine, often enjoyed during celebrations and family gatherings. The tender dough encases a juicy filling, making each bite a satisfying experience. Serve them hot with sautéed green onions for an added crunch and flavor burst!
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 2 cups
- Water
- 3/4 cup (or as needed)
- Ground beef
- 1 pound
- Onion
- 1, finely chopped
- Garlic
- 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger
- 1 tablespoon, grated
- Soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon
- Green onions
- 2, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and water. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, grated ginger, soy sauce, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
- Once the dough has rested, divide it into small pieces (about 1.5 inches in diameter). Roll each piece into a thin circle, approximately 3 inches in diameter.
- Place a generous spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each dough circle. Carefully fold the edges of the dough over the filling, pinching to seal the dumpling securely.
- Arrange the buuz in a steamer basket lined with cabbage leaves to prevent sticking. Ensure they are not overcrowded to allow even cooking.
- Steam the buuz over boiling water for 20-25 minutes, or until the dough is translucent and cooked through, and the filling is hot.
- While the buuz are steaming, heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped green onions and sauté until softened, about 2-3 minutes.
- Serve the steamed buuz hot, garnished with the sautéed green onions. Enjoy them with soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce on the side.
Tips
- For an extra flavor boost, add a splash of sesame oil to the filling.
- You can substitute ground beef with ground lamb or pork for a different flavor profile.
- Feel free to add vegetables like chopped carrots or mushrooms to the filling for added texture and nutrition.
