This hearty Cabbage and Potato Gratin is a delightful combination of tender cabbage and creamy potatoes, all enveloped in a rich, cheesy sauce. With layers of flavor from sautéed garlic and onions, and topped with a golden, bubbly crust of melted cheeses, this dish is perfect for cozy family dinners or festive gatherings. Its origins trace back to European comfort food, where rustic ingredients were transformed into satisfying meals that warm both the body and soul.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the shredded cabbage and sliced potatoes, cooking for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables begin to soften.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the cabbage and potatoes, stirring to coat evenly and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually pour in the milk while stirring constantly, allowing the mixture to thicken, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and half of the grated Parmesan cheese until melted and well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish (approximately 9x13 inches) and spread it evenly.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese on top to create a delicious crust.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
