Ingredients

Original recipe serves 4

Coffee grounds
1 cup, coarsely ground
Cinnamon sticks
2-3 sticks
Piloncillo (unrefined cane sugar)
1/2 cup, broken into pieces
Water
4 cups
Clove (optional)
1-2 whole cloves
Vanilla extract (optional)
1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, piloncillo, and cinnamon sticks. If using, add the whole cloves for an extra layer of flavor.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to help dissolve the piloncillo completely.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and stir in the coffee grounds. Simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the coffee to fully extract its flavors.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the coffee steep for an additional 5 minutes to deepen the taste.
  5. Strain the coffee through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into mugs or cups, discarding the solids.
  6. If desired, add a splash of vanilla extract for a fragrant twist.
  7. Serve hot, and enjoy the rich, comforting flavors of Café de Olla!
