Historically, cannoli originated from Sicily, where they were traditionally filled with sweetened ricotta and enjoyed during festive occasions. Serve with a drizzle of warm chocolate sauce or a sprinkle of fresh berries for an extra touch of sweetness!

Serves 4

Ingredients

Thick-cut bread (brioche or challah)
8 slices
Eggs
4 large
Milk
1 cup
Vanilla extract
1 teaspoon
Cinnamon
1 teaspoon
Ricotta cheese
1 cup
Powdered sugar
1/4 cup, plus extra for dusting
Chocolate chips
1/2 cup
Butter
4 tablespoons
Chocolate sauce (optional)
for drizzling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until well combined.
  2. Dip each slice of thick-cut bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated. Allow excess to drip off.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, powdered sugar, and chocolate chips until smooth and well combined.
  4. Spread the ricotta mixture onto 4 slices of the bread, then top each with the remaining slices to create sandwiches.
  5. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  6. Carefully place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Add more butter as needed while cooking.
  7. Remove the French toast from the skillet and dust with additional powdered sugar before serving.
  8. For an extra touch, drizzle with warm chocolate sauce or serve with fresh berries.

Tips

  • 💡 For a more intense flavor, try adding a splash of orange zest to the ricotta mixture.
  • 💡 If you want a crunchier texture, add crushed nuts to the ricotta filling.
  • 💡 This recipe can easily be made gluten-free by using gluten-free bread.
