This dish not only tantalizes the taste buds but also offers a delightful experience reminiscent of classic French bistros, where omelettes are a beloved staple. The combination of fluffy eggs, savory onions, and creamy cheese creates an indulgent harmony that’s perfect for brunch or a light dinner. Ingredients
- Unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons
- Onion
- 1 large, thinly sliced
- Eggs
- 4 large
- Milk
- 2 tablespoons
- Gruyere cheese
- 1 cup, grated
- Salt
- to taste
- Black pepper
- to taste
- Fresh herbs (optional)
- for garnish
Instructions
- In a non-stick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the unsalted butter over medium heat until melted.
- Add the sliced onion to the skillet. Stir occasionally, cooking until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until well combined and slightly frothy.
- In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of butter and let it melt over medium heat.
- Pour the egg mixture into the skillet, allowing it to spread evenly. Cook undisturbed for a few minutes until the edges begin to set.
- Using a spatula, gently lift the edges of the omelette and tilt the skillet to allow the uncooked eggs to flow to the edges, ensuring even cooking.
- Once the omelette is mostly set, sprinkle the caramelized onions and grated Gruyere cheese over one half of the omelette.
- Carefully fold the other half of the omelette over the filling. Cook for an additional minute, or until the cheese melts.
- Slide the omelette onto a plate and serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
Tips
- For added flavor, consider incorporating a splash of white wine or balsamic vinegar during the caramelization process of the onions.
- If Gruyere is unavailable, substitute with Emmental or a sharp cheddar for a different flavor profile.
- Experiment with adding sautéed mushrooms or spinach for extra nutrition and flavor.
