Cheesy Bacon Green Bean Casserole

Step into the world of comfort food with this mouth-watering Cheesy Bacon Green Bean Casserole. This upgraded version of the classic green bean casserole is loaded with gooey cheddar cheese and crispy bacon, promising to be a star dish at any social gathering. This recipe emerged as a variation of the traditional green bean casserole, which was invented in the 1950s by Dorcas Reilly, a Campbell Soup Company employee. The addition of cheese and bacon, however, transforms it into an irresistible treat that's sure to please both kids and adults.

Ingredients

French fried onions
1 cup
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Black pepper
1/4 teaspoon
Milk
1/2 cup
Cream of mushroom soup
1 can (10.5 ounces)
Cheddar cheese
2 cups, shredded
Bacon
6 slices, cooked and crumbled
Green beans
2 cans (14.5 ounces each), drained or 4 cups fresh green beans, blanched

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the drained green beans, crumbled bacon, and 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and black pepper until well combined. This forms the creamy base of your casserole.
  4. Pour the soup mixture over the green beans, bacon, and cheese. Stir everything together to ensure the green beans are well coated.
  5. Transfer the green bean mixture into a casserole dish. Spread it out evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese over the green bean mixture, followed by the French fried onions.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the onions are golden brown.
  8. Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and makes the casserole easier to serve.

Tips

  • 💡 If you prefer a healthier variation, you can replace the canned soup with a homemade cream sauce and use whole-grain bread crumbs instead of French fried onions.
  • 💡 For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and use a vegetarian-friendly cream soup.
