Chha Trokoun is a beloved traditional Cambodian dish that showcases the vibrant flavors of lemongrass and fresh herbs, bringing a taste of Southeast Asia to your table. This fragrant stir-fried chicken meal is not only quick to prepare but also packed with aromatic spices that tantalize the taste buds. Serve it alongside steamed rice or noodles to soak up the rich flavors of the dish. Perfect for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion, Chha Trokoun captures the essence of Cambodian culinary heritage.

Ingredients

Chicken breast
1 pound, sliced into thin strips
Lemongrass
2 stalks, finely chopped
Garlic
4 cloves, minced
Red chili
1, sliced (adjust to taste)
Fish sauce
2 tablespoons
Oyster sauce
2 tablespoons
Sugar
1 teaspoon
Salt
1/2 teaspoon (to taste)
Pepper
1/4 teaspoon (to taste)
Fresh basil leaves
1 cup, packed
Vegetable oil
2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the sliced chicken breast with the chopped lemongrass, minced garlic, sliced red chili, fish sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the chicken is evenly coated with the marinade. Allow it to marinate for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat until shimmering.
  3. Add the marinated chicken to the hot oil and stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked and no longer pink in the center.
  4. Add the fresh basil leaves to the skillet and stir-fry for an additional minute, allowing the basil to wilt and release its aromatic flavor.
  5. Remove from heat and serve hot with steamed rice or noodles, garnishing with additional fresh basil if desired.

Tips

  • 💡 For a spicier version, add more red chili or even a dash of chili sauce.
  • 💡 You can substitute chicken with shrimp or tofu for a different variation.
  • 💡 Serve with lime wedges for an extra zesty kick.
