Ideal for gourmet sandwiches, or simply served warm with a drizzle of high-quality olive oil for dipping, these rolls are a true celebration of Italian bread-making tradition. Originating from the northern regions of Italy, ciabatta translates to 'slipper' in Italian, aptly reflecting its unique shape. As they bake, your kitchen will be filled with an irresistible aroma, inviting everyone to gather around the table and savor the simple pleasures of homemade bread. Perfect for any occasion, these rolls embody comfort and culinary artistry.

Servings: 8

Ingredients

All-purpose flour
4 cups
Olive oil
2 tablespoons
Salt
2 teaspoons
Sugar
1 teaspoon
Active dry yeast
2 teaspoons
Warm water
1 1/2 cups (110°f/43°c)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes, or until the yeast becomes foamy and bubbly, indicating it's active.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture along with the olive oil.
  3. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, stir until a shaggy dough begins to form. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky to the touch.
  4. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for approximately 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces, shaping each piece into a rounded roll. Place the rolls on the prepared baking sheet and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes, or until they are puffy and have expanded.
  7. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Let the rolls cool on a wire rack before serving. These rolls are best enjoyed warm!
