Creamed Cabbage is a comforting side dish that transforms humble cabbage into a creamy, dreamy delight. This classic dish has roots in European cuisine, often seen as a staple in many households, bringing warmth and rich flavor to the table. The tender cabbage, enveloped in a luscious cream sauce, is a perfect accompaniment to roasted meats, hearty casseroles, or even grilled fish. It's a simple yet elegant way to enjoy vegetables, showcasing how a few basic ingredients can create something truly special.
Ingredients
- Cabbage
- 1 medium, shredded
- Unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons
- All-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons
- Milk
- 1 cup
- Nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon, freshly grated
- Salt
- to taste
- Black pepper
- to taste
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat until foamy.
- Add the shredded cabbage to the pot and sauté for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and fragrant.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked cabbage and stir well to coat evenly, allowing the flour to absorb the butter.
- Slowly pour in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce has thickened and the cabbage is well-coated.
- Season the creamed cabbage with salt, black pepper, and freshly grated nutmeg to taste. Stir to combine all the flavors.
- Serve the creamed cabbage hot, garnished with a sprinkle of nutmeg if desired.
Tips
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of cream in place of some of the milk.
- You can enhance the dish by adding sautéed onions or garlic for extra depth.
- Experiment with different herbs like thyme or dill for a unique twist.
