Creamed Cabbage is a comforting side dish that transforms humble cabbage into a creamy, dreamy delight. This classic dish has roots in European cuisine, often seen as a staple in many households, bringing warmth and rich flavor to the table. The tender cabbage, enveloped in a luscious cream sauce, is a perfect accompaniment to roasted meats, hearty casseroles, or even grilled fish. It's a simple yet elegant way to enjoy vegetables, showcasing how a few basic ingredients can create something truly special.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

Cabbage
1 medium, shredded
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons
All-purpose flour
2 tablespoons
Milk
1 cup
Nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon, freshly grated
Salt
to taste
Black pepper
to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat until foamy.
  2. Add the shredded cabbage to the pot and sauté for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and fragrant.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the cooked cabbage and stir well to coat evenly, allowing the flour to absorb the butter.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce has thickened and the cabbage is well-coated.
  5. Season the creamed cabbage with salt, black pepper, and freshly grated nutmeg to taste. Stir to combine all the flavors.
  6. Serve the creamed cabbage hot, garnished with a sprinkle of nutmeg if desired.
