Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder (if using) until smooth, cooking for about 1 minute.
- Gradually add the milk to the saucepan, stirring constantly. Bring the mixture to a boil; cook and stir for 2-3 minutes or until thickened and bubbly.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat, and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until fully melted and combined.
- In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the cheese sauce. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
- After 1 hour, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30-40 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
- Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving. Sprinkle with paprika for garnish, if desired.
