Creamy Parmesan Polenta
Indulge in this luxurious creamy polenta, a classic Italian comfort dish that is rich, buttery, and utterly satisfying. Made from finely ground cornmeal, this versatile side dish is perfect for pairing with hearty meats or vegetables. The addition of Parmesan cheese adds a deep, savory flavor that complements the smooth texture of the polenta, making it an irresistible addition to your dinner table. Historically, polenta has roots in Northern Italy, where it was once considered a peasant food, but has evolved into a cherished dish enjoyed by many.
Ingredients
- Water
- 4 cups
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Polenta or yellow cornmeal
- 1 cup
- Unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons
- Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup, grated (plus extra for serving)
Instructions
- In a large pot, bring the water to a rolling boil. Add the salt to the boiling water.
- Slowly whisk in the polenta or cornmeal, ensuring there are no lumps.
- Reduce the heat to low and continue to whisk the polenta for about 5 minutes, until it starts to thicken.
- Cover the pot with a lid and let the polenta cook for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
- After 30 minutes, remove the pot from heat and stir in the unsalted butter and grated Parmesan cheese until well combined and creamy.
- Serve the polenta warm, topped with extra butter and Parmesan cheese if desired.
Tips
- For a creamier texture, you can substitute half of the water with milk or cream.
- Feel free to add herbs like rosemary or thyme to the polenta for additional flavor.
- Polenta can be made ahead of time and reheated with a splash of water or broth to restore its creamy consistency.
