Instructions
- Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot. Add enough water to cover the potatoes and 1 teaspoon of salt.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes cook until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork. This should take about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes well, ensuring all water is removed, and return them to the pot.
- Add the room-temperature butter, warm heavy cream, garlic powder, freshly ground black pepper, and additional salt to taste to the pot.
- Using a potato masher or hand mixer, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. For an extra creamy texture, pass the potatoes through a potato ricer before adding the other ingredients.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve the mashed potatoes hot, with an extra pat of butter on top if desired.
Tips
- For best results, use starchy potatoes like Russets or Yukon Golds.
- Warming the cream helps to incorporate it smoothly into the potatoes, and using room-temperature butter ensures it melts evenly.
