Classic Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Immerse yourself in the comforting delight of classic creamy mashed potatoes. This timeless side dish, with its velvety texture and warm, buttery notes, is a staple at family gatherings and holidays. Infused with a hint of garlic and perfectly seasoned, these mashed potatoes will transport you back to your childhood dinner table.

Serves 6

Ingredients

Potatoes
2 pounds, peeled and quartered
Salt
1 teaspoon, plus more to taste
Butter
1/2 cup (1 stick), room temperature
Heavy cream
1/2 cup, warm
Garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon
Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon, freshly ground

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot. Add enough water to cover the potatoes and 1 teaspoon of salt.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes cook until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork. This should take about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes well, ensuring all water is removed, and return them to the pot.
  4. Add the room-temperature butter, warm heavy cream, garlic powder, freshly ground black pepper, and additional salt to taste to the pot.
  5. Using a potato masher or hand mixer, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. For an extra creamy texture, pass the potatoes through a potato ricer before adding the other ingredients.
  6. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve the mashed potatoes hot, with an extra pat of butter on top if desired.

Tips

  • 💡 For best results, use starchy potatoes like Russets or Yukon Golds.
  • 💡 Warming the cream helps to incorporate it smoothly into the potatoes, and using room-temperature butter ensures it melts evenly.
