Classic French Croque Madame

The Croque Madame is a quintessentially French dish, a bistro classic that combines the comfort of a grilled cheese sandwich with the decadence of a fried egg and luxurious Gruyère cheese. The sandwich, originally created as a quick snack in French cafés and bistros, has now become a must-have for a cozy brunch or lunch. It's the perfect indulgence for those seeking a taste of Parisian cuisine at home.

Eggs
2 large
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons
Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons
Gruyère cheese
4 slices
Ham slices
4 slices
Bread slices
4 slices

Instructions

  1. Spread a layer of Dijon mustard evenly on one side of each bread slice.
  2. Place a slice of ham and a slice of Gruyère cheese on the mustard side of two bread slices.
  3. Top with the other two slices of bread, mustard side down, to form sandwiches.
  4. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat until it starts to foam.
  5. Carefully place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has started to melt, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  6. While the sandwiches are cooking, fry the eggs in a separate skillet to your desired level of doneness.
  7. Place a fried egg on top of each cooked sandwich.
  8. Season the egg with salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve hot immediately for the best taste and enjoy the taste of France at home!

Tips

  • 💡 For a Croque Monsieur, skip the fried egg on top.
  • 💡 To ensure the cheese is fully melted, you can finish the sandwiches in the oven for a few minutes at 350°F (175°C).
  • 💡 For an added touch of indulgence, you can make a béchamel sauce and spread it on top of the sandwich before adding the fried egg.
