Classic British Crumpets

Transport yourself to a quaint English tea house with these traditionally made crumpets. Soft, fluffy, and perfect for soaking up butter and your favorite jam, these crumpets are a delightful treat that will take your tea time to a whole new level. The perfect balance of a crispy exterior and a warm, spongy interior makes these crumpets a joy to eat.

Serves 12 crumpets

Ingredients

Vegetable oil
for greasing the griddle
Butter
for serving
Active dry yeast
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons)
Warm water
1 cup (not hot, just lukewarm)
Milk
1 cup
Granulated sugar
1 teaspoon
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Baking powder
1 teaspoon
All-purpose flour
2 cups

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the milk and water. Heat over medium heat until warm to the touch, but not boiling.
  3. Remove the milk mixture from the heat and sprinkle the yeast and sugar over it. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes, until the yeast becomes frothy.
  4. Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, stir until all ingredients are well combined into a batter.
  5. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest in a warm, undisturbed area for about an hour. The batter should double in size.
  6. Preheat a griddle or non-stick skillet over medium heat. Lightly grease it with vegetable oil.
  7. Ladle the batter onto the hot griddle, forming round crumpets. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  8. Cook each crumpet for about 3-4 minutes, until bubbles form on the surface and the edges start to solidify.
  9. Flip each crumpet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, until both sides are golden brown.
  10. Remove the crumpets from the griddle and keep them warm. Repeat with the remaining batter.
  11. Serve the crumpets warm, topped with a pat of butter and your favorite jam.

Tips

  • 💡 For authentic crumpets, use crumpet rings on the griddle to maintain their round shape.
  • 💡 You can also try topping them with honey, Nutella, or cream cheese for different flavors.
