Indulge in a classic Cuban sandwich, known as a Cubanito, where layers of succulent roast pork and savory ham meet melted Swiss cheese and zesty dill pickles, all enveloped in crispy, buttery Cuban bread. This beloved sandwich is a culinary icon of Cuban cuisine, celebrated for its harmonious combination of flavors and textures. A perfect blend of savory, tangy, and crunchy, the Cuban sandwich is not just a meal but an experience that transports you straight to the vibrant streets of Havana.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

Cuban bread
1 loaf
Butter
4 tablespoons, softened
Dill pickles
1 cup, sliced
Swiss cheese
8 slices
Ham
8 slices
Roast pork
8 ounces, sliced
Yellow mustard
4 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Begin by slicing the Cuban bread into 4 equal parts, and then slice each part in half lengthwise to create the sandwich base.
  2. Spread a generous layer of yellow mustard on the inside of each bread slice to enhance the flavor.
  3. On the bottom half of each sandwich, layer the sliced roast pork, followed by the ham, Swiss cheese, and dill pickles.
  4. Place the top half of the bread on each sandwich, pressing down gently to secure the fillings.
  5. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on the outside of each sandwich to achieve a golden and crispy crust.
  6. Heat a large skillet or pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the sandwiches in the pan.
  7. To get that signature Cuban sandwich crunch, press down on the sandwiches with a heavy object, such as a cast iron skillet or a sandwich press, and cook until the bread is toasted and the cheese is perfectly melted, about 5 minutes per side.
  8. Once the sandwiches are golden brown and the cheese is oozing, remove them from the pan and let them rest for a minute before slicing them in half.
