Authentic Cubano Sandwiches

Savor the vibrant flavors of Cuba with these authentic Cubano sandwiches. A delightful marriage of succulent roasted pork, savory ham, creamy Swiss cheese, zesty dill pickles, and tangy mustard, all nestled within crispy Cuban bread. Perfectly pressed, these sandwiches deliver a satisfying crunch and melty goodness in every bite, making them a beloved street food staple in Havana and beyond.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Cuban bread or French baguette
4 rolls
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons, softened
Yellow mustard
2 tablespoons
Dill pickles
1/2 cup, sliced
Swiss cheese
8 slices
Sliced ham
8 ounces
Roasted pork shoulder
8 ounces, sliced

Instructions

  1. Begin by preheating your panini press or a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Slice each roll in half horizontally. Spread a generous layer of yellow mustard on the bottom half of each roll.
  3. Layer the roasted pork, followed by the sliced ham, Swiss cheese, and dill pickles atop the mustard-covered rolls.
  4. Close the sandwiches with the top halves of the rolls, pressing down gently to compact the filling.
  5. Spread the softened butter evenly on the outside of each sandwich, ensuring a golden, crispy finish.
  6. If using a skillet, place the sandwiches in the skillet and use another heavy skillet or a panini press to press down on them. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is crispy and the cheese has melted.
  7. Once cooked, remove the sandwiches from heat and let them rest for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  8. Slice the sandwiches in half diagonally and serve warm, ideally with a side of plantain chips or a refreshing mojito.

Tips

  • 💡 For an extra kick, add sliced jalapeños or a sprinkle of hot sauce inside the sandwich.
  • 💡 If you can't find Cuban bread, a good quality French baguette works as a suitable substitute.
  • 💡 Experiment with different types of cheese, such as provolone, for a unique flavor twist.
