Original recipe serves 4

Basmati rice
1 cup
Water
2 cups
Vegetable oil
2 tablespoons
Cumin seeds
1 teaspoon
Onion
1 medium, finely chopped
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Salt
1 teaspoon, or to taste
Fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, then drain well.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
  3. Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds and toast them for 1-2 minutes until they release their fragrant aroma, being careful not to burn them.
  4. Add the chopped onion to the pan and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
  5. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Add the drained basmati rice and salt, stirring well to coat the rice evenly with the oil and spices.

  10. Fluff the rice gently with a fork and garnish with fresh chopped cilantro before serving.
