Servings: 4

Ingredients

Vegetable oil
enough for deep frying
Breadcrumbs
1 cup
Eggs
2, beaten
Cornstarch
1/2 cup
Sugar
1/4 cup, plus extra for sprinkling
Milk
2 cups

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, mix together your milk, sugar, and cornstarch. Over a medium heat, stir this mixture constantly until it thickens to a custard-like consistency, this should take around 10 minutes.
  2. Pour your thickened milk mixture into a square dish that's been lined with parchment paper. Smooth the surface with a spatula, let it cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until it's firm to the touch.
  3. Once set and firm, remove your milk mixture from the fridge and cut it into bite-sized squares.
  4. Prepare two separate dishes - one with beaten eggs and the other with breadcrumbs. Dip each milk square into the eggs, ensuring all sides are coated, then roll them in the breadcrumbs.
  5. Heat your vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C). You can test the temperature by dropping in a breadcrumb; if it sizzles and turns brown, your oil is ready.
  6. Fry your breaded milk squares in batches until they're golden brown on all sides. This should take about 1-2 minutes per batch. Be sure not to crowd the fryer or pot, as doing so can lower the oil temperature and result in less crispy squares.
  7. Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried milk squares from the oil and drain them on a plate lined with paper towels.
  8. For that final sweet touch, sprinkle your deep-fried milk squares with a little extra sugar while they're still warm. They're now ready to serve and enjoy!
