Indulge in a delightful blend of savory and sweet with these Fig and Bacon Wrapped Figs. The succulent fresh figs are enveloped in crispy, smoky bacon, creating a perfect contrast of textures. A drizzle of homemade balsamic reduction adds a tangy sweetness that elevates the dish, while creamy goat cheese tucked inside each fig creates a luscious surprise. This appetizer not only tantalizes the taste buds but also provides a touch of elegance, making it a perfect addition to any gathering or special occasion. Historically, figs have been enjoyed since ancient times and were even prized by the Romans for their flavor and health benefits.
Ingredients
- Fresh figs
- 12, stems removed
- Goat cheese
- 4 oz, softened
- Bacon slices
- 12, cut in half
- Balsamic vinegar
- 1 cup
- Honey
- 2 tablespoons
- Fresh thyme leaves
- 1 tablespoon, plus extra for garnish
- Salt
- to taste
- Pepper
- to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Cut a small slit in the top of each fig and gently stuff with a small amount of softened goat cheese.
- Wrap each stuffed fig with a half slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
- Arrange the wrapped figs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are not overcrowded.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and the figs are soft.
- While the figs are baking, prepare the balsamic reduction. In a small saucepan, combine the balsamic vinegar and honey. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until it has reduced by half and reached a syrupy consistency (about 10-15 minutes).
- Remove the figs from the oven and drizzle generously with the balsamic reduction.
- Sprinkle the figs with fresh thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve warm and enjoy the explosion of flavors!
Tips
- For an added touch, consider using a flavored bacon, such as maple or peppered.
- You can also experiment with different cheeses, such as blue cheese for a stronger flavor.
- If fresh figs are out of season, try using dried figs as a substitute, though the texture will differ.
