Indulge in the velvety smoothness of Flan Mixto, a beloved Latin American dessert that marries the rich flavors of creamy custard with the sweet allure of caramel. This delightful treat boasts a luscious blend of milk and condensed milk, creating a dessert that is both elegant and comforting. Servings: 8

Ingredients

Sugar
1 cup (for caramel)
Water
1/4 cup (for caramel)
Milk
1 cup
Condensed milk
1 can (14 ounces)
Eggs
4 large
Vanilla extract
1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves, then stop stirring. Allow the mixture to simmer until it turns into a golden caramel, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Quickly pour the caramel into a 9-inch round baking dish, swirling it to coat the bottom evenly. Be cautious as the caramel will be very hot.
  4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, condensed milk, and vanilla extract until well combined and smooth.
  5. Pour the custard mixture over the caramel in the baking dish.
  6. Place the baking dish inside a larger baking pan or roasting pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water, about halfway up the sides of the baking dish, creating a water bath.
  7. Carefully transfer the pans to the preheated oven and bake for about 60 minutes, or until the flan is set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove the flan from the water bath and allow it to cool to room temperature.
  9. Once cooled, refrigerate the flan for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow it to fully set.
  10. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the baking dish to loosen the flan. Place a serving plate on top of the dish and quickly invert it to release the flan. The caramel sauce will flow beautifully over the top.
  11. Slice and serve the Flan Mixto chilled, garnishing with fresh fruit or whipped cream if desired.
