Ingredients

Original recipe serves 8

All-purpose flour
2 cups
Baking powder
1 teaspoon
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Vegetable oil
3 tablespoons
Warm water
3/4 cup

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  2. Add the vegetable oil and warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing with a spoon until a shaggy dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle in a little extra flour as needed.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 equal-sized balls and cover them with a clean kitchen towel to prevent drying out. Let them rest for 10 minutes.
  5. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until hot.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each dough ball into a thin, round tortilla, approximately 8 inches in diameter. Try to keep the thickness consistent for even cooking.
  7. Cook each tortilla on the hot skillet for about 1 minute on each side, or until lightly browned and puffed. Adjust the heat as necessary to prevent burning.
  8. Once cooked, transfer the tortillas to a plate and cover with a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft until ready to serve.

Tips

  • 💡 For a richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of lard or butter along with the vegetable oil.
  • 💡 Experiment with different flours, such as whole wheat or spelt, for a unique twist on traditional tortillas.
  • 💡 Tortillas can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or frozen for longer storage.
