Authentic French Fries

Experience the joy of making your own authentic French fries at home. Crispy, golden, and utterly addictive, these homemade delights put the fast-food version to shame. Made from fresh potatoes, fried to perfection in vegetable oil, and seasoned just right with salt, they are the ultimate comfort food that's worth every bite.

Ingredients

Salt
to taste
Vegetable oil
enough to submerge the potatoes
Russet potatoes
2 large

Instructions

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized sticks, approximately 1/2 inch thick and 3-4 inches long.
  2. Soak the cut potatoes in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes. This step is crucial for getting rid of excess starch and achieving that desired crispiness.
  3. Drain the potatoes thoroughly, then dry them well using a clean kitchen towel. The drier the potatoes, the crispier they will be.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). To test the oil's temperature, insert a potato stick into the oil. It should sizzle upon contact.
  5. Working in small batches, carefully add the potatoes to the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pot as this will lower the oil's temperature and result in soggy fries.
  6. Fry each batch for about 5-7 minutes, or until the fries are golden brown and crispy. Remember to allow the oil to reheat between batches.
  7. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, remove the fries from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate. This will help remove any excess oil.
  8. While the fries are still hot, sprinkle them with your desired amount of salt. Hot fries absorb salt better, resulting in a well-seasoned final product.
  9. Serve your homemade French fries immediately, while they are still warm and crispy. Enjoy!

Tips

  • 💡 For even more flavor, consider adding some garlic powder, onion powder, or your favorite herbs to the salt before sprinkling it onto the fries.
  • 💡 If you don't have a deep fryer, you can also make French fries in the oven. Just toss the potato sticks with a little oil and bake at 450°F (230°C) for about 30 minutes, or until crispy.
