Ingredients

Original recipe serves 6

Salt
1 teaspoon or to taste
Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon or to taste
Garlic
3 cloves, minced
Onion
1 large, thinly sliced
Cabbage
1 large head, cored and coarsely chopped
Bacon
6 slices, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the chopped bacon. Cook until crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon from the skillet, leaving the bacon fat behind, and set the bacon aside.
  2. In the same skillet with the bacon fat, add the sliced onion and minced garlic. Cook until they begin to soften, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and stir to mix with the onions and garlic. Cook until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized, about 10-12 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  4. Season the cabbage with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Add the cooked bacon back to the skillet and stir to combine with the cabbage.
  6. Serve hot as a side dish.

Tips

  • 💡 For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and use 2 tablespoons of olive oil to sauté the onion and garlic.
  • 💡 Add a splash of apple cider vinegar at the end of cooking for a tangy twist.
