Instructions
- In a shallow dish, thoroughly mix the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
- In a separate dish, whisk together the beaten egg and milk until well combined.
- Dip each tomato slice into the flour mixture, making sure both sides are fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- Next, dip the floured tomato slice into the egg mixture, ensuring it's fully covered. Allow any excess to drip off.
- Dip the tomato slice back into the flour mixture for a second coat. Repeat this process with all tomato slices.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. The oil should be about 1/2 inch deep in the skillet.
- Once the oil is hot, fry the coated tomato slices in batches, careful not to overcrowd the skillet. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the tomatoes are golden brown and crispy.
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried green tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
- Serve your delicious Southern-Style Fried Green Tomatoes hot, as a delightful appetizer or a colorful side dish.
Tips
- For an extra kick, try adding a bit of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture. For a gluten-free option, replace all-purpose flour with a gluten-free alternative.
