Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 2 cups
- Granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup
- Baking powder
- 1 tablespoon
- Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg
- 1, beaten
- Milk
- 3/4 cup
- Rum or brandy
- 1/4 cup
- Lemon zest
- 1 tablespoon
- Orange zest
- 1 tablespoon
- Vegetable oil
- for frying
- Powdered sugar
- for dusting
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk, rum or brandy, lemon zest, and orange zest. Mix well until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; the batter should be slightly lumpy.
- In a deep pot or fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). To test the oil, drop a small spoonful of batter in; it should sizzle and float to the surface.
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Once golden, remove the fritule from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
- While still warm, roll the fritule in powdered sugar until fully coated. Serve warm and enjoy the delightful combination of flavors!
Tips
- For an extra touch, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter for added warmth and spice.
- You can also experiment with flavored liqueurs, such as orange liqueur, to create your own unique twist on this classic treat.
- Serve these fritule with a side of fruit compote or a drizzle of honey for an extra layer of sweetness.
