Galão - Portuguese Milk Coffee

Galão is a rich and creamy hot beverage hailing from the vibrant cafes of Portugal. This delightful pick-me-up combines bold, freshly brewed espresso with warm, frothy milk, lightly sweetened to perfection. It's the ideal companion for a leisurely brunch or a cozy afternoon.

Serves 1

Ingredients

Espresso
1 shot
Milk
1 cup, preferably whole milk for a creamier texture
Sugar
1-2 teaspoons, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare a shot of espresso using your preferred method, whether that's an espresso machine or a moka pot.
  2. While the espresso is brewing, pour the milk into a small saucepan and place it over medium heat. Heat the milk until it is hot, but take care not to let it boil.
  3. Once the milk is heated, use a milk frother or a whisk to froth the milk until it achieves a creamy, foamy consistency.
  4. Pour the hot espresso shot into a tall, clear glass to showcase the beautiful layers of the Galão.
  5. Add sugar to the hot espresso and stir until it is completely dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to your liking.
  6. Slowly pour the frothed milk into the glass over the espresso. Use a spoon to hold back the foam, allowing the milk to mix with the espresso first.
  7. Finally, gently spoon the remaining foam on top of the milk to create the final layer of your Galão.
  8. Serve your Galão immediately while it's warm and enjoy the creamy, sweet, and strong flavors.

Tips

  • 💡 For best results, use freshly ground beans for your espresso.
  • 💡 If you don't have an espresso machine or moka pot, strong brewed coffee can be used as a substitute.
  • 💡 For a dairy-free version, almond milk or oat milk can be used. They froth well and add a unique flavor to the drink.
