Garullas
Garullas are delightful traditional Spanish pastries that encapsulate the essence of Spanish culture in every bite. These soft, anise-scented treats are fried to golden perfection, offering a satisfying crunch on the outside while remaining tender and fragrant on the inside. Originating from the sun-kissed regions of Spain, garullas have been enjoyed for generations, often served during festive occasions and family gatherings. Their unique flavor profile, thanks to the aromatic anise seeds, makes them a perfect companion for coffee or tea.

Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and anise seeds. Mix well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
- Gradually add the warm water to the dry mixture, stirring continuously until a dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Divide the dough into small pieces (about the size of a golf ball) and roll each piece into a ball using your palms.
- In a large frying pan, heat enough olive oil over medium heat to submerge the dough balls halfway.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully add the dough balls to the pan. Fry them in batches, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per batch.
- Using a slotted spoon, remove the garullas from the pan and place them on paper towels to drain any excess oil.
- Allow the garullas to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature.
Tips
- For a twist, try adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to the dough for an extra layer of flavor.
- Serve garullas with a sprinkle of powdered sugar or a drizzle of honey for added sweetness.
- These can also be enjoyed with a side of chocolate sauce or a fruit compote for dipping.
