German Bratwurst with Sauerkraut

Indulge in the rich flavors of Germany with this classic dish featuring juicy bratwurst sausages nestled in soft, toasted buns and topped with tangy, warm sauerkraut and sweet caramelized onions. This hearty meal is perfect for gatherings, backyard barbecues, or a cozy family dinner. The combination of savory bratwurst, the crunch of sauerkraut, and the bold kick of mustard creates a delightful symphony of flavors that will transport you straight to the beer gardens of Bavaria.

Ingredients

Bratwurst sausages
4-6
Buns
4-6, preferably bratwurst or hoagie rolls
Mustard
to taste, preferably spicy brown or whole grain
Salt
to taste
Black pepper
to taste
Caraway seeds
1 teaspoon
Beer
1 cup, a lager or wheat beer works best
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons
Onion
1 large, sliced
Sauerkraut
2 cups, drained and rinsed

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and sliced onion, cooking until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Push the onions to one side of the skillet and add the bratwurst sausages. Cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
  3. Pour in the beer and add the caraway seeds. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover the skillet and simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. Meanwhile, in a separate pot, heat the sauerkraut over medium heat until warmed through, stirring occasionally.
  5. To serve, place a bratwurst sausage in each bun. Top generously with sauerkraut and the caramelized onions. Offer mustard on the side for dipping or drizzling.
  6. Enjoy your delicious German Bratwurst with Sauerkraut!

Tips

  • 💡 For extra flavor, you can grill the bratwurst instead of pan-frying them.
  • 💡 Pair this meal with a side of German potato salad or pretzel bites for a true German feast.
  • 💡 Feel free to experiment with different types of mustard to find your perfect flavor match!
