Ginjinha

Embrace the spirit of Portugal with this traditional Ginjinha, or Ginja, a luscious liqueur that combines the tartness of ginja berries (sour cherries) with the warmth of brandy and the sweet spice of cinnamon. This deep ruby-red potion is a favorite in Lisbon, often served in edible chocolate cups for an extra indulgent treat. In every sip, you'll be transported to the narrow, cobbled streets of the old city, where locals gather outside Ginjinha bars to share stories and enjoy this delicious drink.

Servings: 30

Ingredients

Brandy
1 liter
Cinnamon stick
1
Water
1 cup
Sugar
2 cups
Ginja berries (sour cherries)
2 pounds, pitted

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the pitted ginja berries, sugar, water, and cinnamon stick.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it reaches a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes or until the sugar has fully dissolved.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  4. Once cooled, stir in the brandy until well combined.
  5. Pour the mixture into a large glass bottle or jar, making sure to include the cinnamon stick and some of the ginja berries for additional flavor infusion.
  6. Seal the bottle or jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place for at least 15 days to allow the flavors to meld together.
  7. To serve, pour a small amount into a glass (or a chocolate cup if you're feeling indulgent) and savor the rich, sweet, and slightly tart flavors of this traditional Portuguese liqueur.
