Glogg is a delightful warm beverage that encapsulates the essence of Scandinavian winters. This traditional mulled wine is a symphony of rich red wine and vodka, delicately infused with aromatic spices, zesty citrus, and a touch of sweetness. Perfect for cozy gatherings or festive celebrations, Glogg not only warms your body but also uplifts your spirit, evoking the charm of holiday festivities. Originating from Sweden, this drink was favored by the nobility in the 19th century and served during Christmas, reflecting the joyful camaraderie of the season. Enjoy it with friends and family, and let the warmth of Glogg fill your home with the scents of cinnamon and citrus.

Servings: 6-8

Ingredients

Red wine
1 bottle (750 ml), preferably a fruity variety
Vodka
1/2 cup
Granulated sugar
1/2 cup (or to taste)
Almonds, slivered
1/2 cup
Raisins
1/2 cup
Lemon, sliced
1
Orange, sliced
1
Cinnamon sticks
3-4
Cardamom pods, crushed
6-8
Cloves
5-6

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the red wine, cloves, crushed cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, orange slices, and lemon slices.
  2. Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it is hot but not boiling (about 10-15 minutes). This gentle heating helps to release the flavors of the spices.
  3. Add the raisins, slivered almonds, granulated sugar, and vodka to the pot, stirring well to dissolve the sugar completely.
  4. Continue to heat the mixture for another 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Taste and adjust the sweetness as desired.
  5. Once ready, remove the pot from the heat and strain the glogg through a fine mesh sieve to remove the spices and fruit slices.
  6. Serve the glogg warm in mugs or glasses, garnished with additional orange slices or a cinnamon stick for an elegant touch.
