Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with these gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, where creamy, artisanal cheeses melt together with savory prosciutto, sweet fig jam, and peppery arugula, all nestled between perfectly golden, buttery slices of sourdough bread. This delightful twist on a classic brings a sophisticated touch to a beloved favorite, making it perfect for a cozy lunch or a chic appetizer. Historically rooted in the simple, humble grilled cheese, this elevated version showcases how creativity can transform everyday ingredients into a gourmet experience.

Ingredients

Sourdough bread
4 slices
Unsalted butter
4 tablespoons, softened
Goat cheese
2 ounces, crumbled
Cheddar cheese
2 ounces, sliced
Gruyere cheese
2 ounces, sliced
Prosciutto
4 slices
Fig jam
2 tablespoons
Arugula
1 cup, washed and dried
Balsamic glaze
to drizzle

Instructions

  1. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
  3. Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet or griddle.
  4. Layer the goat cheese, cheddar cheese, and Gruyere cheese evenly on top of the bread slices.
  5. Spread fig jam on top of the cheese layers, then add prosciutto and a handful of arugula.
  6. Top with the remaining two slices of bread, buttered side up.
  7. Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. You can press down slightly with a spatula for even toasting.
  8. Once cooked, remove the sandwiches from the skillet or griddle and let them cool for a minute.
  9. Drizzle balsamic glaze generously over the sandwiches.
  10. Slice the sandwiches in half and serve hot, enjoying the melty goodness!

Tips

  • 💡 For an extra layer of flavor, try adding caramelized onions or fresh herbs like thyme.
  • 💡 Experiment with different types of cheeses to customize your flavor profile.
  • 💡 If you prefer a crunchier sandwich, consider adding some toasted nuts or seeds to the filling.
