Homemade Grainy Mustard

This vibrant homemade grainy mustard packs a flavorful punch with its tangy and slightly sweet profile, making it an essential condiment for sandwiches, burgers, charcuterie boards, and marinades. Mustard has a rich history dating back thousands of years, with evidence of its use in ancient Roman cuisine. This recipe combines the robust flavors of brown and yellow mustard seeds, enhanced by the warmth of garlic and the sweetness of honey, creating a versatile addition to your culinary repertoire.

Serves 16 (1 tablespoon each)

Ingredients

Brown mustard seeds
1/4 cup
Yellow mustard seeds
1/4 cup
Apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup
Water
1/4 cup
Honey
2 tablespoons
Salt
1 teaspoon
Turmeric
1/2 teaspoon
Garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the yellow mustard seeds and brown mustard seeds. Allow them to soak in water for about 1 hour for improved texture.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the apple cider vinegar, 1/4 cup of water, honey, salt, turmeric, and garlic powder until well combined.
  3. After soaking, drain the mustard seeds and add them to the vinegar mixture. Stir well to ensure the seeds are evenly coated.
  4. Cover the bowl and let the mixture sit at room temperature for 24 hours, stirring occasionally to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. After 24 hours, transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor. Blend until you reach your desired consistency, whether smooth or chunky.
  6. Once blended, transfer the grainy mustard to a clean jar or container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to develop further.
  7. Enjoy your homemade grainy mustard as a condiment on sandwiches, burgers, or as a flavorful addition to salad dressings and marinades!

Tips

  • 💡 For a spicier mustard, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes during the mixing process.
  • 💡 Experiment with different vinegars, such as white wine vinegar or malt vinegar, for a unique flavor twist.
  • 💡 This mustard can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 months, making it a great make-ahead condiment.
