Grape Pie
Indulge in the delightful sweetness of grape pie, a unique summer dessert that showcases the vibrant flavors of sun-ripened grapes. This luscious pie combines a tangy grape filling enveloped in a flaky, buttery crust, creating a perfect harmony of textures and tastes. Historically, grape pie hails from the regions where grapes are plentiful, making it a beloved treat during harvest season. With its stunning purple hue and mouthwatering aroma, this pie is sure to be a showstopper at any gathering, bringing smiles and satisfaction to all who partake.
Ingredients
- Unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons, cut into small pieces
- Lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons
- Salt
- 1/4 teaspoon
- Cornstarch
- 1/4 cup
- Granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup
- Fresh grapes
- 4 cups, halved and seeded
- Pie crust
- 2 (9-inch) crusts, homemade or store-bought
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out one sheet of pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim any excess crust hanging over the edges to ensure a clean finish.
- In a large bowl, gently combine the halved grapes, granulated sugar, cornstarch, salt, and lemon juice. Stir until the grapes are evenly coated and the sugar begins to dissolve, allowing the juices to mingle.
- Pour the grape mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly across the bottom. Dot the filling with small pieces of unsalted butter for added richness.
- Roll out the second sheet of pie crust and place it over the grape filling. Crimp the edges to seal securely and cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the edges of the crust brown too quickly, cover them with aluminum foil to prevent burning.
- Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for at least 1 hour before serving. This cooling time allows the filling to set, ensuring each slice holds its shape.
Tips
- For a deeper flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the grape filling.
- If fresh grapes are not available, you can use frozen grapes; just ensure to thaw and drain them before using.
- Serve warm or at room temperature with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgence.
