Classic French Broccoli and Zucchini Gratin

This gratin is a delightful combination of tender broccoli and succulent zucchini, all nestled under a golden and bubbly layer of melted cheese. This traditional French dish, hailing from the cuisine of the Alps, is the perfect way to elevate your vegetable side dishes. Each bite is a symphony of flavors, from the slight crunch of the broccoli, the softness of the zucchini, to the rich, creamy cheese that ties it all together. It's comfort food that's both hearty and nutritious.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Butter
2 tablespoons
Onion
1, finely chopped
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Broccoli
1 large head, cut into florets
Zucchini
2, sliced into rounds
Salt
to taste
Pepper
to taste
Crème fraîche
1 cup
Cheese
1 cup, grated (gruyère or emmental are traditional choices)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Steam the broccoli florets until they're tender but still have some bite, about 5 minutes. Set them aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté until they're soft and golden, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the zucchini slices to the skillet and cook until they're slightly softened, about 5 more minutes.
  6. In a baking dish, arrange the steamed broccoli, sautéed zucchini, onions, and garlic.
  7. In a bowl, combine the crème fraîche with half of the grated cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Pour the crème fraîche and cheese mixture over the vegetables in the baking dish, making sure they're well coated.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top.
  10. Bake the gratin in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, or until it's golden and bubbling.
  11. Remove the gratin from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy this classic French comfort food!

Tips

  • 💡 For a variation, try adding thinly sliced tomatoes or bell peppers. You can also experiment with different types of cheese, such as Comté or Beaufort. For a lighter version, replace the crème fraîche with Greek yogurt.
